<span style="color: cyan; font-size: x-large;"><i>Oh my word friends!!! I've bitten off more than I may be able to chew this summer. Unfortunately, I haven't taken as many pics as I would have liked, but here's the run down.</i></span><br />
<span style="color: cyan; font-size: x-large;"><i><br /></i></span>
<span style="color: cyan; font-size: x-large;"><i>I didn't exactly clean out my classroom on the last day of school. I figured our wonderful custodians wouldn't get to my room until after July 4th because of summer school on my end of the building. I went back to work on it about two weeks after school was out. They had cleared my room!!!! Stuff everywhere! Floors ready to be waxed! I had intended to throw out a TON of stuff. It was time for a purge. Even though my room had been cleared, my son was doing the art class in summer school for three days, and I had planned on working, so I did. </i></span><br />
<span style="color: cyan; font-size: x-large;"><i><br /></i></span>
<span style="color: cyan; font-size: x-large;"><i>So far this summer I have:</i></span><br />
<span style="color: cyan; font-size: x-large;"><br /></span>
<i><span style="color: cyan; font-size: x-large;">tossed 6 bags of trash </span><span style="color: cyan; font-size: large;">(those big black bags that fit in the cans at our kids bathrooms!)</span></i><br />
<i><span style="color: cyan; font-size: x-large;">taken out 8 boxes of recycling </span><span style="color: cyan; font-size: large;">(paper and cardboard)</span></i><br />
<span style="color: cyan; font-size: x-large;"><i>taken 30, 000 staples to the office for redistribution</i></span><br />
<i><span style="color: cyan; font-size: x-large;">Given the office probably 40 or more pens for redistribution </span><span style="color: cyan; font-size: large;">(I may have an office supply problem!)</span></i><br />
<span style="color: cyan; font-size: x-large;"><i>Packed 2 crates full of books into the back of my truck to take to McKay's tomorrow!</i></span><br />
<span style="color: cyan; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />

<br />
<span style="color: cyan; font-size: x-large;"><i>I kept looking around the room today wondering where to start. I finally decided to start at the classroom door and work my way around the perimeter. To help encourage me to keep going I took before and after pics of each area and sent them to my sister, who was working today. Here is what I accomplished.</i></span><br />

<span style="color: red; font-size: x-large;"><i><b>Today I am linking up with Allie at <a href="http://www.alliethegypsyteacher.com/" target="_blank">The Gypsy Teacher</a> to Rewind and Retell about something we did in class this past year.</b></i></span><br />
<span style="color: red; font-size: x-large;"><i><b><br /></b></i></span>
<span style="color: red; font-size: x-large;"><i><b>This rewind and retell goes alllllllll the way back to September of last year. I remember it was cool enough that we wouldn't melt outside (finally) and we were all antsy during the Language Arts lesson. I am blessed to have a door that leads from my classroom right outside to a decent sized grassy area so I opened the door and said "come on!" We went outside and played a little game I made up on the spot. If I said aloud a verb, students had to act it out while coming toward me. If I said a word that was a noun, they had to freeze. If they missed it they went back to the beginning. It was kind of like Mother May I or Freeze with nouns and verbs. It served two purposes, we moved and we learned. It was also a lot of fun to laugh at the kids.</b></i></span><br />

<span style="font-size: x-large;"><i>Hello friends,</i></span><br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><i><br /></i></span>
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><i>I'm super bummed about not getting to go to Vegas this year, so I'm getting through the week by making some things for the classroom. First up, pool noodle base ten. This was super easy, and I made both of these sets in less than 20 minutes! My own 6 year old has enjoyed exploring with them this afternoon.</i></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><i>First, I went to Dollar Tree and bought some pool noodles. I have to admit, I have 2 Dollar Trees within 5 minutes of my house, and the first one only had 2 noodles left in the store. I was afraid I had already missed out on them this season and would have to pay twice the price somewhere else, but the second store I went to still had a great selection. </i></span><br />

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><i>I really loved this chapter. I am all about rearranging, reorganizing, and redoing my classroom this summer. Once school was out for the summer I stayed away intentionally for a couple of weeks. I knew I needed that time to reflect. </i></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><i><br /></i></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><i>Here were a few of my thoughts: I need a much better traffic flow around the room, what am I thinking not having a large group area, why didn't I get rid of those 8 foot long cubbies last year, what do I want morning message/calendar to look like, what areas do I want to ensure student work is displayed in (we have to be real careful because of the fire marshal)?</i></span></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><i><br /></i></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: purple; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: x-large;"><i><b>I needed this chapter at this point. </b></i></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><i><br /></i></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><i>I went in last week for a day, mostly because my son was participating in the art and tennis camp offered through our summer school program. On this day (after I fed my need for adult socialization) I recycled. And I recycled. And I trashed. And I recycled some more. I'm nowhere near done, I just ran out of time. I'm now waiting on my floors to be waxed so I can get in and get busy. Here are some of my thoughts on what will be happening in my little ol' space that I've taken from the reading and my reflection:</i></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><i><br /></i></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><i>1. My classroom will be an inviting, welcoming place. I've got a purple rug coming from a funded Donor's Choose project and I am going to paint a shelf I have. I plan to make sure the room arrangement is comfortable and flowing. </i></span></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><i><br /></i></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><i>2. I WILL have a large meeting area. I think this is the area I'm most excited about. My room is not very big. In place of the unsightly 8 foot long shelf I will place my rug, and just this week the custodians hung my new 6x4 corkboard that someone gave me for FREE!!!! That's where my calendar will be hung. I didn't even have a wall in my room where I could hang the calendar (the aforementioned shelf was also almost 5 feet tall)! In the meeting area I will make sure to have all the materials needed for our large group work.</i></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><i>3. Small group areas will be revamped to make sure that the materials we need can be kept easily accessible. I didn't really have a good system for this last year. I have 2 kidney shaped tables. Basically those tables are where my assistant and I work if we are at tables with small groups. I want to make sure the materials all have homes and aren't just scattered.</i></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><i><br /></i></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><i>I loved the quote at the end of the chapter that says " Classroom environments are organic-they grow as we do." I truly feel like my environment has grown with me as I've grown as a teacher and I plan for it to continue to grow with me over my years of teaching.</i></span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><i><br /></i></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><i>Onward to Chapter 4. It's ironic that this is the chapter that hit for this week, while I've been in TNCORE Training with the state. One of our modules covered thinking aloud in depth and a lot of what we went over was covered in the book.</i></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><i><br /></i></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><i>Let me start by saying that I truly believe, and have believed for a long time, that modeling thinking aloud is very important in teaching our students to be independent, critical, and creative thinkers. But I'm not very good at it. I love how Ms. Miller gave us some think alouds to get us started. Between reading this chapter this week and practicing in training, I'm feeling a bit more confident in this area.</i></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><i><br /></i></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><i>I also asked myself "Why don't you make more comments on your students work?" I don't have a good answer for this. Laziness maybe. Lack of time possibly. Maybe I thought that the first graders wouldn't really read the comments or questions I posed. Not anymore. I think that I could really spark some great conversations this way, as well as encourage and promote the students in their own thinking and work.</i></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><i><br /></i></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><i>There is so much more I could say about this chapter, but since I'm combining two weeks into one post, I will stop there. I can't wait to write about and show off my classroom at the end of the summer. </i></span> </span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><i>I'm linking up again, and I'm loving this book!</i></span></div>
<br />
<span style="color: red; font-size: x-large;"><i>Real life isn't scripted, neither is real teaching.</i></span></div>
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">I haven't been able to get that quote out of my mind all week. It seems as if so much of the curriculum we as teachers (at least at the elementary level) are given these days is scripted. I remember when I taught for a neighboring county and our school bought into Project Grad because a very tiny portion of our school fed into a Project Grad high school. I distinctly remember getting the math resources and seeing the script I was to read each day. I was furious. I couldn't believe that there were people out there telling me what to say to students that neither they nor I had met. Students who were as diverse as they come. I still get mad thinking about it. I had only been teaching 3 years at the time and teaching was nothing like what I had learned in my college courses. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Now, almost 15 years later, we continue to get resources that are scripted. Why? A script can't take into account what prior knowledge a child may or may not have. It cannot meet the needs of individual children! I found that the scripted reading curriculum I was told to use stifled my creativity as a teacher as well as the students creativity in learning. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Keeping it real now.... I NEED to read this book! I think, no, I know-I've gotten so bogged down in all of the changes taking place in education at the moment that I have forgotten why I became a teacher in the first place, especially why I chose the Early Childhood licensure. I have settled into a routine and it's not a good one. Sure my kiddos leave first grade having learned the standards for the year, but do they truly understand what they have learned? Will they remember what they have learned in the future? Will they be able to say "I had a great time in 1st grade! We had so much fun and we learned a lot of cool stuff!" Can I honestly say I have held true to my core beliefs as a teacher? I can't say I like what I'm seeing. However, I can say that I'm going to work on changing things. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Ok, so I feel like I rambled for most of this post, but I know my fellow teacher friends will get it. I can't wait to dive into this book more and to re-evaluate my own beliefs and practices. It's long overdue!</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: lime; font-size: large;"><i>After looking at the linky posts, I've come back to edit and add the following:</i></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"><span style="color: cyan;">What are your beliefs about teaching and learning?</span><br /><br />Well, over the years my beliefs have evolved a little, but honestly they are still pretty much the same. I believe all children can learn, but they learn differently. I believe that learning should be done across several modalities (I know I don't learn by only listening or by only doing, but a combination of many different ways. I believe that learning should be fun and is often best done in a play setting during the early years. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"><i><span style="color: cyan;">How do you build a sense of community in your classroom?</span></i><br /><br />I start the year by having students come up with the rules with me. We discuss how we are all a classroom family for the year, that we may not always agree, but we will treat each other with respect. I have let students also help me come up with consequences, depending on the students I have. Another way I build community is by having students work in groups often, and those groups change, depending on the task. I expect that we all learn to work together and I model that a lot at the beginning of the year.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<span style="color: cyan; font-size: large;"><i>How do you go about teaching kids something new?</i></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Well, that depends on what it is that I'm teaching. Sometimes I will use small groups, sometimes whole group. I try to involve students as much as possible, though. I want them to own their learning.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<br />

So, this little blog has been neglected! I have plans for the summer for blogging, and I figure, why not start with the Teaching With Intention by Debbie Miller book study hosted by Mr. Greg at <a href="http://www.thekindergartensmorgasboard.com/" target="_blank">The Kindergarten Smorgasboard.</a> I'll be linking up with <a href="http://www.enchantedkindergarden.com/2015/06/teaching-with-intention-chapter-1.html" target="_blank">Enchanted Kindergarten</a> for chapter one. Here goes! <br />
<br />
First, I took this video of my classroom at the end of the school year, to post about, before I knew of the book study. I wanted a kind of before and after. Because I knew I wasn't happy with my room this year, I kind of let it go to pieces at the end and so I videoed (is that a word!) the down and dirty of it. School is out and I'm in the process of throwing out a TON of stuff. I've got a new carpet and carpet squares on the way from a Donor's Choose project and a new cork board for the wall for morning message. I'm definitely getting rid of the 8 foot cubby shelf, too! I'll be posting another video reveal later in the summer when I'm done.<br />
<br />
I had to divide it into 2 parts.<br />
<br />

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhntkQXtv3LsgihWR7BZRgTmqcc4bjhiGq_3qFbxOs70jAQjGBFs_Jejv1u5NTz8KE8c8heIbXXrWIACI99o3VyWaKWWHip-31XAUv251FHx-U33adBCeYpscyu1BJquO5a1KEn95fpBM4/s1600/classroom+vid+1.mov" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhntkQXtv3LsgihWR7BZRgTmqcc4bjhiGq_3qFbxOs70jAQjGBFs_Jejv1u5NTz8KE8c8heIbXXrWIACI99o3VyWaKWWHip-31XAUv251FHx-U33adBCeYpscyu1BJquO5a1KEn95fpBM4/s320/classroom+vid+1.mov" width="180" /></a></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Warm, cheery, and inviting! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I struggle with this one in my current classroom. There are a ton of cubby type shelves that are not very useful. All the shelves and the cubbies that have to stay take up almost all of the wall space. Any anchor charts we make during the year go away rather quickly because we have no where to hang them where the kids can use them. I can't paint the walls or hang anything from the ceiling. I can only cover 20% of the walls. The room is small! I will probably have 20 students next year. Therefore, 20 desks. I want a book corner, so I'm trying to use the rug I have coming to also arrange the classroom library around. I want people who walk in to think "Wow, I would love to be in this class!" and I know that is not the case right now. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
My ideal classroom wold be abuzz with chatter about meaningful things that we are learning about. I often play music in the background and usually the kids love that. I love a colorful classroom and plan to add splashes of color next school year. I have a couple of shelves to paint and I'm going to make the cork board pop.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjokjKSnRFsiGDLBnChZ3864-2gFfye0YUOGMeYvx5zsbN6gd6FPiycISSyRN_e_ER6hFkjOEeR02baaiJCG4RyZfqIlMgQCj9HdAzafxdGGlQDp982JB9np-4pURpYVn114Hf-TfIBmc4/s1600/Question+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="123" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjokjKSnRFsiGDLBnChZ3864-2gFfye0YUOGMeYvx5zsbN6gd6FPiycISSyRN_e_ER6hFkjOEeR02baaiJCG4RyZfqIlMgQCj9HdAzafxdGGlQDp982JB9np-4pURpYVn114Hf-TfIBmc4/s320/Question+2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I loved in the book when she states that she didn't even know if the teacher was in the room. To me, that is amazing. I can see the classroom full of student learning with the teacher facilitating where needed. I can see students being in control of their learning and being excited to learn. I want that!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I want to move to more small group and one on one instruction next year. Ideally, I think I would be better able to assess students and what they have learned and be able to guide instruction better. In the past few years our team has moved to more whole group reading instruction and then utilize small groups. I'm thinking of utilizing mostly small groups next school year and I'm researching what that would look like. I know my assistant and I would be stationed at either of our kidney shaped tables. I would often work at the stations with students as well. Student work would be largely completed at the small groups and stations. I'm sure some individual work would be completed at their desks as well. Like I said, I'm researching how I want to accomplish this.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgaCZnK3O_deY3w1IEx6HcOBnys8UgnnI-DcKfCM5-csK6qXUv6mnXVV4u09NX8C5BStzlkWeHr9e7AaPk6hldHa0iP1eSX8wArEdHsDyaGAgdpclM-WuzigpkehsGA66CeRkjNhwljJ6o/s1600/Question+3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="123" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgaCZnK3O_deY3w1IEx6HcOBnys8UgnnI-DcKfCM5-csK6qXUv6mnXVV4u09NX8C5BStzlkWeHr9e7AaPk6hldHa0iP1eSX8wArEdHsDyaGAgdpclM-WuzigpkehsGA66CeRkjNhwljJ6o/s320/Question+3.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Converting to stations and small groups. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I've gotten so accustomed to large group instruction with pull out of individuals and small groups when needed that this will be a big transition for me. I've already started running schedules through my head on how to accomplish this. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I also need to make sure I'm organized. I start the year with the best of intentions and with great plans of organization, and then BAM! the year starts! Once the year starts I do good to make piles out of the way and keep my head above water. I'm trying to combat that by having a strong year long plan and things already organized to begin with.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhg4YhoqQqagtlETBWk9y6Cx2-Rr7qFf6GnziSBZxCtXEVw_AlYVinDaSxF2JvvJuriL1PLDfyj_2RsvI3DrMp1PMkiV0HCu5y-dBjYeuLyPD9UXNHoF5S00muZa6bcshU3xtX7EphaZVI/s1600/Question+4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="123" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhg4YhoqQqagtlETBWk9y6Cx2-Rr7qFf6GnziSBZxCtXEVw_AlYVinDaSxF2JvvJuriL1PLDfyj_2RsvI3DrMp1PMkiV0HCu5y-dBjYeuLyPD9UXNHoF5S00muZa6bcshU3xtX7EphaZVI/s320/Question+4.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Hmmmmmm, based on where I'm trying to go next school year, not much is already in place. We will see where things go in the next school year, though!<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I am so excited about the rest of this book. Last week during a PD activity we had to create and take a standardized test like our students will have to take next school year. I created a test based on third grade standards and I had a revelation. I need to read more adult text. I really had trouble comparing and contrasting and remember what I read! OMWord! Maybe it was just a bad day for me. Maybe not! I know though, that this summer will be full of reading not only for PD, but for pleasure!</div>

Ok, this blogging stuff is time consuming!! I knew it would be, but man oh man, how do all of you find time to teach, blog, TPT, and have a family. I'm working on a balance, or should I say my balance is working me over! It doesn't help that we've been passing a tummy bug around our house between the four of us for about 2 and a half weeks. For the moment we are all healthy (knock on wood REALLY HARD! LOL)<br />
<br />
Ok, here goes!<br />

And to beat it all, we ended up getting out of school early yesterday!!!! Parties were supposed to be at 2:15, and at 1:00 we found out the county was dismissing due to snow in the mountains at 2:00. We got a frantic call from admin to start our parties and get them done! The kids were off the chain wild! </div>

Of course where our school is at in the county, it was sunny by the time we left, snow only hit Gatlinburg I think, but I didn't want to really hang around. So I cleaned up the food and left. We have a four day weekend, and guess where I am today.</div>

Yup! Cleaning up the aftermath while listening to a little Bon Jovi on Pandora. Honestly, I had planned all along to come in today and clean and organize. My littlest has her Valentine Party at daycare today and I was coming toward school anyway. My oldest and daddy are hanging out. Since it's so quiet here, I thought I would come in, clean, plan, and blog!</div>

I know that research from years ago suggests it is better used with older students, but there are many "tests" that go along with reading on our level. In the past I have made it a competition to see who could get the most points during the course of the school year. I've also done prizes for reaching goals each six weeks. Inevitably many of my students got tired and bored after a short amount of time and I just don't feel like I saw much growth in comprehension.
This year I feel like my students are really struggling in reading comprehension and I am trying anything and everything to help them, including introducing AR. I must pause here and tell you that most of the following was actually my assistant's idea, she has been using AR in other classes she's been in for years. We wanted the students to own the whole thing, from beginning to end. We wanted to get them excited about reading and taking the tests. First, we built a snowman. We didn't tell the kids why we were building him or what we would be doing.
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_MkphKMg_sGny_YWeneQvEYqYjXdtWq5rEW9AtsToSQHSAXJt7ibd4bR4KzF0BQgfXMH1saQr9xsSIxxmbOMjiyrpSK05D3qWgmmHynczLD4Y_LMQ6N3_XjKF1DKQMeCf3KOQ0Qn0VOo/s1600/snowman+on+floor.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_MkphKMg_sGny_YWeneQvEYqYjXdtWq5rEW9AtsToSQHSAXJt7ibd4bR4KzF0BQgfXMH1saQr9xsSIxxmbOMjiyrpSK05D3qWgmmHynczLD4Y_LMQ6N3_XjKF1DKQMeCf3KOQ0Qn0VOo/s320/snowman+on+floor.jpg" /></a></div>

After we hung him on the wall the kids were given construction paper and each group made a scarf, hat, and boots, or the nose, eyes, and mouth. One group made buttons. Some of the kids decided he needed a broom. We let them have creative freedom. We explained what AR is, what they will be doing, and how we will track their progress, both individually and as a class.
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjLsAZbfTt7BViO21TLuFVrwmvOV1KVZDGVYRCL7UGOe_jugn8tZTxliEiENTMqUwESMdUG5sIIxMSuLLlIDDFfkjWbEWsuivzq70EFQUqWZwDhLmJUzH9mnMML9VDwlnwM9lSDazTUw2I/s1600/DSC07582.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjLsAZbfTt7BViO21TLuFVrwmvOV1KVZDGVYRCL7UGOe_jugn8tZTxliEiENTMqUwESMdUG5sIIxMSuLLlIDDFfkjWbEWsuivzq70EFQUqWZwDhLmJUzH9mnMML9VDwlnwM9lSDazTUw2I/s320/DSC07582.JPG" /></a></div>
As a class we are marking each test taken and passed with an 80% or higher on a ten frame chart.
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgBR8ESYaarOzE5a-H3UUnKO2gC4XkLaXVkc_zKerBn4ycJyFW0tdXqbukLPYM4DmOT9RKfjAzZxAruSDTjcPSN5asVFHoP47yG8YN-fK-A3ru0a5B9WulS9nl41rL4Jg1s4TvJ6SE9ctc/s1600/DSC07581.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgBR8ESYaarOzE5a-H3UUnKO2gC4XkLaXVkc_zKerBn4ycJyFW0tdXqbukLPYM4DmOT9RKfjAzZxAruSDTjcPSN5asVFHoP47yG8YN-fK-A3ru0a5B9WulS9nl41rL4Jg1s4TvJ6SE9ctc/s320/DSC07581.JPG" /></a></div>
Students also add a snowflake to the snowman for each test taken and passed, again at 80% or higher, so we can see our work in progress. We keep track of each child's progress in their fluency folders (I'll post about this later, it goes with our Team Time.) We are using leveled readers from a previous reading series and divided them up into levels. Students can't go on to the next level until they have taken and passed all tests in the one before. Students also take AR tests on our weekly reading story from the series we use now. They have done so great that I take a grade on the test.
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgjt-xBICdbeqYgxd9Aklob-OZi0fQBqEfrKLw-kzthiJwhys0CS_kQVERzeRHRHNl8dn4sBczZre4StFynHFdPm2o_81T1tyGfXOZAu_8e_BF0fPYw4_scbsd35NhPy-YI8rsShFkphRE/s1600/DSC07586.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgjt-xBICdbeqYgxd9Aklob-OZi0fQBqEfrKLw-kzthiJwhys0CS_kQVERzeRHRHNl8dn4sBczZre4StFynHFdPm2o_81T1tyGfXOZAu_8e_BF0fPYw4_scbsd35NhPy-YI8rsShFkphRE/s320/DSC07586.JPG" /></a></div>
They even came up with the title themselves.
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi1mpqZk4qQsCYC7gcVs6P0D9vEowCBHcR4gN7hSdcxA7NFYMYmePDqxE26LF9f-TY70Xyq7rlmLtQyyZMion3MS1_LgaPGSq-m7M0XSj6O73FaEaEDmwQZmyeQ56fYTLqAOvODB-9FdLk/s1600/DSC07584.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi1mpqZk4qQsCYC7gcVs6P0D9vEowCBHcR4gN7hSdcxA7NFYMYmePDqxE26LF9f-TY70Xyq7rlmLtQyyZMion3MS1_LgaPGSq-m7M0XSj6O73FaEaEDmwQZmyeQ56fYTLqAOvODB-9FdLk/s320/DSC07584.JPG" /></a></div>
That is not the greatest of pics, but we hung the sign high, and I am short!!!
To add in a little more math, we had students estimate how many books they thought we would have to read to fill the snowman and wrote their predictions.
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgyLzIJhTjbyJRM1yAvMKoTgRAhilFJquMc2CkpCoQvuqPsWyMnhZMml0wsaMju4M1rEvDQ9XDBpppxvkbSV-Opl96oV7YcZreUvOUU2vqqiX-21YPxi2x55X_X2epvr90Qt_tU8j0UjJw/s1600/DSC07580.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgyLzIJhTjbyJRM1yAvMKoTgRAhilFJquMc2CkpCoQvuqPsWyMnhZMml0wsaMju4M1rEvDQ9XDBpppxvkbSV-Opl96oV7YcZreUvOUU2vqqiX-21YPxi2x55X_X2epvr90Qt_tU8j0UjJw/s320/DSC07580.JPG" /></a></div>
And this is how far we've come so far!
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjm-MFEEykSWt5HTDxNFz_csusCOeaBqShJg7MEqry3rYp1RBBcz5bBYO44IrwpT65r1WWgN4-hAfW2crmLzZ7vI817k8nFEnlN5aj8fbRKdSDSLutTpF2x-u8EoRgCpc2uj1Sz7JvcmFY/s1600/DSC07579.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjm-MFEEykSWt5HTDxNFz_csusCOeaBqShJg7MEqry3rYp1RBBcz5bBYO44IrwpT65r1WWgN4-hAfW2crmLzZ7vI817k8nFEnlN5aj8fbRKdSDSLutTpF2x-u8EoRgCpc2uj1Sz7JvcmFY/s320/DSC07579.jpg" /></a></div>
When we filled the first snowball we added the buttons the students had made. We didn't tell them we would have a party or anything when we filled the snowman. We wanted the excitement for reading to be the true reward. And they are excited. We only have Ms. Debbie in our class two days a week, and the kids get so excited when she comes in because they know that we will be able to do AR. We try on the other days, but there's just not always enough time to get everyone through in one day with one working computer. When she is with us she can take a group to the computer lab. The kids have become very capable of logging in on their own.
I really think that between AR and our daily Team Time I am seeing some great results this year. The kids are so excited and they have already come up with a title for our next reading adventure!

So I'm going to attempt to link up with <a href="http://ericabohrer.blogspot.com/2015/01/new-years-resolutions-linky.html?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+EricaBohrersFirstGrade+%28Erica+Bohrer%27s+First+Grade%29">Erica's Edventures</a> and post about my New Year's Goals. I'm not much of a resolution person, but goals are good.
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1oew22ATHnqU5it8GCyPcnATAe7CGdiMKcONIvwiqr3sbf_rqOwxB7o9KCmyrvKjA8oEDd6dm_3TIFZH2zqyhsAa3kC_Wr4UOcUaE2pqtsiaD-lvcmMd5qJ43377dLyuQoWZa4HRz59Y/s1600/New+Years+Goals.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1oew22ATHnqU5it8GCyPcnATAe7CGdiMKcONIvwiqr3sbf_rqOwxB7o9KCmyrvKjA8oEDd6dm_3TIFZH2zqyhsAa3kC_Wr4UOcUaE2pqtsiaD-lvcmMd5qJ43377dLyuQoWZa4HRz59Y/s320/New+Years+Goals.png" /></a></div>
I'm terrible at keeping resolutions and to be honest I haven't set any resolutions in years. I have however thought about some goals I have for this year. So here goes!
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg8fgRET7fzWHBhGg_F2dZ1DyTVsTXUJGwjrdtj0JGDOweQ1_wbfOtGrJvlPKPxaUDI68_HkVd5Jvu8pD3Ib4_NJ9DKocZXUIpf4d37kG9OI2JV9xdVxUGJ6Cg3kjIbsWvm30cbeSvoi64/s1600/Professional+Goals.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg8fgRET7fzWHBhGg_F2dZ1DyTVsTXUJGwjrdtj0JGDOweQ1_wbfOtGrJvlPKPxaUDI68_HkVd5Jvu8pD3Ib4_NJ9DKocZXUIpf4d37kG9OI2JV9xdVxUGJ6Cg3kjIbsWvm30cbeSvoi64/s320/Professional+Goals.png" /></a></div>
One goal here is to make my kids happy little learners. I'm so tired of all the drill and practice. I want to encourage creativity in learning. I have been perusing the web for more ideas and I've been going back to my first years of teaching and trying to reinvent some of the things I did to fit our standards today.
I plan to communicate better with my parents as well. Sure, I send newsletters, emails, progress reports, and I answer any questions they have, but I need to take the time to really communicate with them.
I also want to do a better job of really helping and listening to other teachers in my school. Sure I share everything I make with them, but sometimes I think I am so busy trying to do ten different things that I don't really listen and really help.
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPTypR36URgzWYjj3-bCRLs2zPqBVvCiztA-UWgAxTDrb2iK1saExqUMNBlx-p8JjXBWIh5rByj-XBPgmzA0V4a9aa5-5pMB0qdKqiMiQSiLJsm6qQN1gBLJLthP1R5CQE0faOeJpYFTk/s1600/Personal+Goals.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPTypR36URgzWYjj3-bCRLs2zPqBVvCiztA-UWgAxTDrb2iK1saExqUMNBlx-p8JjXBWIh5rByj-XBPgmzA0V4a9aa5-5pMB0qdKqiMiQSiLJsm6qQN1gBLJLthP1R5CQE0faOeJpYFTk/s320/Personal+Goals.png" /></a></div>
Personal goals include spending quality time with my husband and kids. When my husband graduated from college last spring and went back to work, it seems that our family time really suffered. We love to go to the mountains, window shop at the mall, and go to parks. It seems that the second half of this year really flew by! We did go to a pumpkin farm and a few other places, but it seemed like it was a rushed day. I want to really be there for them.
Another personal goal is to do much better with time management. I tend to spend way too much time on games and Facebook. I know that time can be better spent with my family or creating for TPT.
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh7PsUv-Jv3kKwnnOrtiXp99A00KWU_SR77QsteKUYIblYSAW4LeR_FYDdW6RTnkbtXNH58AVHIeXysLxWGsb6ac_UsRQUO18j9rgGE1Wv6TI-NtU-qPGcQ-6K5RCI-ZTuwOVqWOsgbxPk/s1600/Health+Goals.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh7PsUv-Jv3kKwnnOrtiXp99A00KWU_SR77QsteKUYIblYSAW4LeR_FYDdW6RTnkbtXNH58AVHIeXysLxWGsb6ac_UsRQUO18j9rgGE1Wv6TI-NtU-qPGcQ-6K5RCI-ZTuwOVqWOsgbxPk/s320/Health+Goals.png" /></a></div>
This is really a huge topic in our house right now. My husband and I agree that we need to make some major changes for ourselves and our kids. We don't have goals such as "lose x number of pounds" but to eat healthier in general. We already don't go out to eat a lot, I cook at least five nights a week, but since finding out our son is gluten and dairy intolerant, our meals (and grocery budget!) have changed dramatically. A big challenge in cooking gluten and dairy free is not relying on the commercially made items in the grocery store. Many are full of oils and fats that are unnecessary.
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjkhNJjv0uFWp1Y0dSC0kzv98sl0BvtqLybvsfA2Wz55_cGbqnfhQwTQK4u7vuWR-D1e93TTEG2yaPEDZq4cQ5RFXNkn7VjN-PjGR-shk7lnzDJUTA_hRUTUHg0hE4efuWaMZ8QKA2o9ns/s1600/Financial+Goals.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjkhNJjv0uFWp1Y0dSC0kzv98sl0BvtqLybvsfA2Wz55_cGbqnfhQwTQK4u7vuWR-D1e93TTEG2yaPEDZq4cQ5RFXNkn7VjN-PjGR-shk7lnzDJUTA_hRUTUHg0hE4efuWaMZ8QKA2o9ns/s320/Financial+Goals.png" /></a></div>
We have discussed our financial goals for this year and have put ourselves back on a budget via The Dave Ramsey plan. We were very successful using this years ago and are going back to it. We have big plans to take the family to Disney this year and hopefully to Europe in a few years. I know that my little Teachers Pay Teachers Store is going to help here. So I guess my personal goal of creating for TPT will bleed over to our financial goals.
So there they are. Some of my goals for this year. Of course the list isn't inclusive, but it's a start.Rebeccahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01245313237244145034noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2567009937768869402.post-41532159232855365262015-01-02T21:13:00.000-08:002015-01-02T21:13:07.994-08:00Frozen Friday and other Christmas fun
So my New Year's Resolution includes something about waking up this little ol' blog of mine. So here goes.
I think about posting all the time and I wonder why anyone would be interested in anything I have to say or anything I've done in my classroom. I'm going to start with a couple of things we did on the last couple of days before Winter Break (oh glorious winter break that is going by waaaay too fast!)
We made ornaments from chenille stems and beads.
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYUCBSlQxlTs8ofE82VUh2Z4vfEmRyxUAcmNrc4tb8ukKVd1zZoeIRqRFTKKyTGEuevCZ5tRrNmlbpTINiRlNjRIW3qdI4oUcKnOuKmN7yEQQTwgRJIxLtyS9aRGku4mOFJJ-9fUe0aY0/s1600/ornament+pic.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYUCBSlQxlTs8ofE82VUh2Z4vfEmRyxUAcmNrc4tb8ukKVd1zZoeIRqRFTKKyTGEuevCZ5tRrNmlbpTINiRlNjRIW3qdI4oUcKnOuKmN7yEQQTwgRJIxLtyS9aRGku4mOFJJ-9fUe0aY0/s320/ornament+pic.jpg" /></a></div>
The kids loved it. We made wreaths and candy canes. My former para-professional cleaned out her garage one year and brough me a TON of beads. I'm still using them years later!
We also made Santas.
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUydNdMXJtaDGu6nUYaUwx-DK6PXjsqPxTlUTBbQg0n3uPC4tiwUBFLL2abJdkMDZh8xb0z2_kVKbOnXDzYPlN6p9l6SuX5q1r8nAXucHno305tS8I6-T3pidZUZuuTyGbmcfzraX0kEc/s1600/santa.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUydNdMXJtaDGu6nUYaUwx-DK6PXjsqPxTlUTBbQg0n3uPC4tiwUBFLL2abJdkMDZh8xb0z2_kVKbOnXDzYPlN6p9l6SuX5q1r8nAXucHno305tS8I6-T3pidZUZuuTyGbmcfzraX0kEc/s320/santa.jpg" /></a></div>
I love giving the kids paper and a few other miscellaneous items and letting them have full creative freedom. I usually have them do a little writing activity with these, but time got away from me this year and we didn't get to the writing.
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9IrwTZ0z3GbNWZkj7HY5Pi0MSFHaDuWt1XKyjbh_q734fKXgg86utb0SODNXsXwkuIch9CCWgm_USo9yHV1q8W2zUdI9aKvaehCz3lXxlLC0uvB4ILC-ytZY4iwNuhgpdzMnhu41D2_M/s1600/santas+on+wall.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9IrwTZ0z3GbNWZkj7HY5Pi0MSFHaDuWt1XKyjbh_q734fKXgg86utb0SODNXsXwkuIch9CCWgm_USo9yHV1q8W2zUdI9aKvaehCz3lXxlLC0uvB4ILC-ytZY4iwNuhgpdzMnhu41D2_M/s320/santas+on+wall.jpg" /></a></div>
They all turn out so unique! I love them!
Instead of a traditional Christmas or Holiday party, my team always puts together a day full of activities. In the past we've done a Polar Express Day, a Grinch Day, and even A Little House Christmas. This year we decided to revolve our day around Frozen. And we called it Frozen Friday!
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiJQa4kLj3tQHhSzK6Yp7yqNskjcWwUvvb-smjVpmvpz4Z-fpDQALxzHTqDLr0GWdyrjnXdt9gztKclhoqJmVByl4QA6pD-eftH5gLx9uI3IHIdBvz3yq4VweCbCkCHw4AiMLTxPcb7rAQ/s1600/frozen+friday.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiJQa4kLj3tQHhSzK6Yp7yqNskjcWwUvvb-smjVpmvpz4Z-fpDQALxzHTqDLr0GWdyrjnXdt9gztKclhoqJmVByl4QA6pD-eftH5gLx9uI3IHIdBvz3yq4VweCbCkCHw4AiMLTxPcb7rAQ/s320/frozen+friday.jpg" /></a></div>
We searched the internet and found Frozen Bingo, bookmarks, door knob holders, and so many other ideas. We made melting Olafs from marshmallows and had hot chocolate. We ended the day with a "snowball" fight using wadded up paper from the recycling bin. The kids had a ball! Unfortunately I can't find the pic from the fight, but imagine 14 first graders being told they can throw paper wads at their friends and teacher! It was awesome!
I don't feel like this was much of a post, but at least it's a start.
I've also found in writing this post that blogger has changed a little since I last blogged on my personal blog, so I guess I'm going to have to get used to the new format.
Until next time.....

My. Goodness!Maybe I'm not cut out for this! By this I mean trying to make the blog look like I want it to look. Here's hoping I can pay to have someone design a blog soon! Ha! It has taken me all night just to adjust the banner so it didn't take up the whole screen when you open the blog. I've been blogging on my personal blog for a few years but I've never tried to change the background and banner.<br /><br />
While this page still isn't how I'd like, I'm going to persevere on and begin blogging, finally! If you're checking me out from Instagram, welcome, and please feel free to follow me now! <br />

<br />
A few things about me: I am in my 16th!! year of teaching. I have taught preK, K, 1st, 2nd, and a transition 1st grade class. After teaching K for six years I thought I was at home and never wanted to leave. I moved to 1st grade and I have loved it ever since! I follow many teacher blogs and have loved getting ideas from so many wonderful and creative teachers. <br />
<br />
I have a five year old little boy and a nine month old little girl. I'm married to a wonderfully supportive man and live in the same area in which I grew up. I love the K-8 school I teach in and my 1st grade team is fabulous! I truly count them among my close friends.<br />
<br />
I'm certain I won't be able to keep up with the fabulous bloggers out there, but hopefully one day I can share a few great ideas.<br />
